			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What happened to June?! What a crazy month it was, and July is also whizzing right by. With my work schedule, exercise continues to be a challenge for me. I have started swimming a few times a week, but I am hoping to really take it up a notch in these next 3 weeks. I need to finish dieting by the end of July.</p>
<p>August is my birthday month (yes, I celebrate the entire month) and I refuse to be “on a diet.” I can be “on maintenance,” but I don’t want to have to worry about losing weight during the traditional celebratory period. So, that means I have to shed at least 5 lbs. in the next 3 weeks. My original goal was 30 lbs. Somewhere along the way I got a little cocky and decided I should go for 35, but 30 is much more realistic, and I decided to be happy if I reach it. What a great birthday present it will be to myself. Wish me luck!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>All I can say today is hooray! Well, I guess there are two things I can say: Hooray, and here’s a recipe for a great panini:</p>
<p><strong>Jalapeño Turkey Club Panini</strong></p>
<p>2 pieces whole wheat bread</p>
<p>1 ½ slices fat-free Swiss cheese</p>
<p>8 slices shaved turkey</p>
<p>1 T chopped tomato</p>
<p>1 slice turkey bacon, cooked and chopped</p>
<p>5 slices pickled jalapeño peppers</p>
<p>2 sprays olive oil cooking spray</p>
<p>Assemble as a sandwich, with the cheese forming the first layer on each slice of bread. Spray the outward-facing sides of both pieces of bread with the olive oil spray and either cook in a panini maker or sear on both sides in a frying pan. Yum!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>After I hit the 17-lb. mark, I had to make a decision on how to handle the upcoming 3 weeks. I had a number of events that were definitely going to make dieting a challenge: a wedding and 3-day weekend in Rancho Mirage; Connecticut cousins coming to visit the next week; and then Mother’s day brunch w/ the family. I decided that since I was a little over half-way to my goal, it would be a good time to see what maintenance would be like in “real-life” situations. So, instead of avoiding and abstaining, I just tried to make good choices whenever possible, with the goal of keeping my weight steady over the entire 3-week span.</p>
<p>Because my diet is really a balanced, healthy eating plan, rather than a drastic elimination of food groups, my maintenance naturally included many of the same principles that I have followed from the beginning of my weight-loss program. The biggest difference was that I had less planning, less control, and less exercise. There was more eating out and more social eating and drinking. However, I still tried to eat my usual portion size, and I chose well balanced meals with whole grains, lean proteins, and lots of veggies. At the end of the 3 weeks, I weighed in at break-even, without ever having fluctuated more than 2 pounds. It is good to have an idea of what life will be like when I reach my goal—which, by the way, I have revised (increased) to 35 pounds lost by August 1st. I’m now ready for Phase 2!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The last 2 weeks have been incredibly busy both at work and at home, so I was actually shocked to see the scale saying I have now lost 17 pounds! I have to say, it has been challenging. While dieting these last two weeks, I have celebrated my 18th wedding anniversary, spent a weekend with my parents, and visited with old friends from out of town. In my world, such events usually involve eating out with lots of food and drink. So, I had to make a plan for myself before I set out.</p>
<p>First, choosing the right restaurant is important. For one event, we switched our choice of restaurant from the one we originally planned to go to—the one w/ super gourmet buttery food—to another great option, one w/ lots of fresh seafood. I have gotten into the habit of ordering my fish blackened so I have lots of flavor, and I request no oil or butter. Second, I planned what I was going to eat and how much before I got to any of the restaurants for any of the events, and this planning included any appetizers. Appetizers can be very dangerous, and most times I just skip them now. However, when I do order one, I’ll usually just order another appetizer for my entrée or choose something else that is on the small side. And I never feel bad for not finishing—I am pretty good about guessing my portion size and I try to stick to it even when eating out.</p>
<p>Next weekend may be trickier—a weekend in the desert for the wedding of one of my best friends!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>My first week without weight loss—Ugh! But, as I’ve said before, I need to be able to live with this plan, so if it takes me a little longer to lose, I’ll deal with it. And, I didn’t do as well balancing out my fun activities w/ increased exercise as planned. Moreover, I didn’t expect my fun to be soooo decadent! Since it was Lori’s birthday celebration (yes, California Chef’s operations manager Lori), I gave myself one full day of throwing caution to the wind. I won’t be doing this again anytime soon, but I think it was worth it: eggrolls (lobster-filled &amp; fried), Kobe meatballs, crab cakes (fried), bacon-wrapped scallops, ribs, more lobster, truffled Mac &amp; cheese, s’mores, bread pudding, and, of course, lots of beverages before, during, and after. I was even mauled by a camel—oh wait, that has nothing to do w/ weight loss. On further reflection, I should just be happy that I survived the celebration and didn’t <em>gain</em> any weight this week:)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Almost half way there! I think it’s time to kick up the exercise a notch. Although I know that exercise is really important for general good health and weight loss, I have been holding off on joining the gym or going gung-ho on Zumba (an exercise DVD that I purchased 1 ½ yrs ago). I admit I’m afraid that I’ll burn out on exercise and then gain weight when I stop. Also, I want something in reserve in case I hit a plateau. Lastly, I hate to sweat almost as much as my mother does. So, I have been trying to balance my weekend splurges w/ brisk walking for an hour on Saturdays &amp; Sundays. However, I have a few birthdays, a wedding, and out of town guests soon approaching, and I think I’ll need more than a couple of walks to help if I’m going to continue losing. So, this week I’m starting w/ additional home exercises w/ weights. Next week, maybe Zumba?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Surpassing the 10-pound milestone is a great feeling! My clothes fit better and I can really feel the difference. After last week’s asthma attack, my doctor gave me a one-week steroid pack to fix me up (in addition to a breathing treatment and a big shot in the butt). To my horror, she told me not to be surprised if I gained a little weight and if my hunger increased. Well, I was in no position to argue, so I bucked up and prepared to be hungry.</p>
<p>It may be obvious to everyone else, but I’ve figured out that having diet-friendly snack choices readily available to me makes a huge difference. Otherwise, I wind up eating 2 or 3 snacks searching for something satisfying. So, I have a few “go to” snacks always on hand, like string cheese &amp; fruit, healthy spreads &amp; Wasa crackers, and bean dips w/ brown rice chips. And in case I’m hungry between meals or between official snack times, I have some raw “free” veggies washed and cut up (“free” are those veggies that you can eat as much as you like of because they’re incredibly low in calories). Also, I’m lucky to work where we always have some low-fat peanut butter cookies if I need something sweet. But even more than cookies, my favorite “go to” is yogurt &amp; granola. It’s great as an official snack or for when I haven’t planned a meal, because I can eat it any time of day w/ or w/o fresh berries.</p>
<p>So, my hunger is under control, and I’m 1/3 of the way to my goal—and now only 4 pounds to half-way there!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last week was a tough one, and I’m actually happy w/ the 1 lb. I lost. My allergies have been out of control, so between taking lots of Benedryl, which wipes me out, and trying to breathe without wheezing, I was extremely sedentary. I still feel like a slug w/ very little energy to even write this. Hopefully the doctor will fix me up this afternoon, and I’ll soon be able to return to a more normal—and active—routine.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>OK, so this is a day late. Maybe it’s because I only lost 1 pound last week and just couldn’t get myself to admit I didn’t meet my 2 lb/wk goal. I am rationalizing that my weekly average is still 2 pounds, but I am not really happy w/ Week 4’s results. I have been very good at eating throughout the day and eating to my new calorie count. Again, I think my problem was in the beverage department. Social commitments made it a challenge to keep to my one night per week allotment of wine. So, I decided to test my limits w/ a 3-night allotment. Not good! Maybe 2 nights and increased exercise?</p>
